Shadow of the Valley
A graphite drawing on paper by Ella Senbruns, 21 x 30cm. This artwork was created in 2024 as part of ‘Alchemy’, a group exhibition at Land Street Gallery, Toowong QLD.
Within Senbruns’ work for ‘Alchemy’, her surreal mark making is orientated around the pencil. The artist reflects on ‘nigredo’ (Italian: blackness), which is symbolic within alchemical tradition for the first step of transformation: chaos and melancholy. ‘Shadow of the Valley’ and ‘The Soul’s Journey Home’ respond to the fragility of the body during our approach towards death, and attempt to visualise the moment of the soul’s departure.
